Audits are of increasing importance for aerodromes and authorities when it comes to implementing management systems. Quality management systems (QMS) have proven their value controlling operational processes with focus on quality. As part of the continuous improvement cycle, audits are an essential instrument to identify and use potential improvements.

Based on ICAO requirements, the implementation of safety management systems at airports similar principles and instruments are needed to improve the safety of operations. EASA’s new requirements focusing on aerodromes (EU No 139/2014) also includes the use of audits as part of the oversight function by competent authorities. Therefore, aerodrome inspectors have to possess knowledge about auditing techniques.

The focus of this 2-day training course is on the basic principles of auditing, audit procedures and techniques. Besides the management of audit programmes (e.g. as part of a certification process), a close look will be taken on the whole audit process – beginning from planning through conduction up to analysis. Alternative procedures will be presented and discussed. The course refers to the basic principles of the guideline for auditing management systems (ISO 19011).

The course enables the participants to conduct audits in their own organization or to prepare for an upcoming audit (e.g. by an authority or external organization). The audit criteria could be safety, quality or environmental aspects at aerodromes. The participants have the possibility to practice what they have learnt.

Mr Walther works at airsight in the quality of airsight’s aviation consultant and has extensive expertise in airport operations. He has particularly been involved in complex topics such as runway operations, apron management and air traffic services, ground handling and safety management systems.
In the last few years, he conducted several comprehensive safety assessments – notably on behalf of Dubai Airports – on different specific subjects related for instance to low visibility operations, parallel runway operations and jet blast issues. Mr Walther’s competencies enable him to closely work with air traffic controllers, pilots, operational staff, as well as authorities. Furthermore, Mr Walther is an auditor for SMS and an experienced trainer on auditing in aviation and other safety related topics.

Wolfgang Jöres

On the basis of his commercial pilot license and his engineering degree, Mr Jöres has been working in aviation for more than 30 years, mainly in leadership positions. After a career as an officer and helicopter pilot in the German Air Force, he took responsibility for the modification of the German Polar research aircraft and operation in the polar regions. After that he was Managing Director, Accountable Manager, and Continuing Airworthiness Manager of a specialized aircraft operation. This company executed flight inspection services for the calibration of landing and navigation facilities in Europe and the Middle East. In his diverse positions Mr Jöres acquired an in-depth knowledge of operational, technical, economic, and regulatory aspects in aviation, e.g. modification of aircraft, special mission operations, and airspace infrastructure. Today he acts as an aviation consultant for special mission operators, and as an aerospace auditor.
