Airfield Pavement Inspections
Airfield pavements are exposed to high stresses during their projected lifetime, which inevitably leads to a decrease of their condition over time. As one of the vital assets of an airport, pavements in good condition do not only cater for safety but also for business continuity. To make sure airfield pavements provide sufficient bearing strength and ensure uninterrupted and resilient operations, it is of utmost importance to monitor their condition and conduct regular inspections.
This two-day course focusses on the regulatory requirements for pavement monitoring and maintenance as well as the factors influencing pavement inspections. Moreover, the course shows an approach to successfully plan coordinated pavement inspections and how to deal with the different damages one can find on aerodrome movement areas.
The course has been specifically developed for aerodrome infrastructure, maintenance, and operations personnel as well as personnel of civil aviation authorities, civil engineers, architects and other contractors.
As a central part of this course, airsight offers to conduct a half day pavement inspection exercise on site - on your aerodrome’s movement area.

Trainer
Dr.-Ing. Carsten Karcher
Dr.-Ing. Carsten Karcher has been active as a consultant, expert, scientist, lecturer, and moderator in the fields of pavement construction methods and materials, structural design, as well as the construction and maintenance of pavements for more than 25 years. At the beginning of his career, he led the Department of Road Construction and Structural Design of Pavements at the Institute of Highway and Railroad Engineering of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), formerly the University of Karlsruhe, for many years. Since 2013, he has been working as a pavement consultant for various clients and has been supporting the European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA), first as Director and later as Secretary General.
Carsten is an active member of numerous European working committees focusing on pavement technology, sustainability, and health and safety. He is also co-author of the German standard reference book Straßenbau und Straßenerhaltung (Road Construction and Road Maintenance), published by ESV Verlag. His expertise is reflected in numerous international publications and lectures on these topics, as well as in his role as project manager for several European and German research projects.
He has frequently led airsight courses such as Pavement Construction and Aerodrome Operations and Reporting Aerodrome Pavement Strength – ACR/PCR Method, and is one of the trainers of Aerodrome Pavement Design and Management. Together with airsight’s experts, he has conducted numerous in-house training sessions on pavement-related topics worldwide and has been supporting the team as a consultant in this field for over 12 years.
Kevin Rudnik, M.Sc.
Kevin is a graduated aeronautical engineer and holds a Master of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics. He specializes in aerodrome certification, compliance and auditing. As an Aviation Auditor Kevin conducts audits at various European airports and flight operators.
In his crucial role within the airsight aerodrome certification department, Kevin supports our customers in questions regarding EASA and FAA certification, compliance with rules and regulations as well as audit programs.
Kevin has been working on several projects for airsight. These projects recently included the airports of Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Toronto, Belgrade, Douala, Yaoundé.
