Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), drones – there are many terms for this rapidly developing technology. While offering safety and security for aerodrome operators, there are risks associated with them that need to be considered and counteracted.

This training course discusses the challenges related to the operation of UAS at or in the vicinity of aerodromes and how to assess and manage the associated risks successfully.

After clarifying the terms and definitions related to unmanned aviation, such as the difference between automation and autonomy, we will focus on the constantly evolving EU legal framework. Participants will become familiar with EASA´s risk-based approach to regulating the operation of UAS.

Opinion No 01/2020 - EASA’s U-Space concept - will allow the integration of manned and unmanned aircraft in one airspace.

We will introduce drone applications relevant to airport operators such as surface inspection and security applications, we will focus on drone protection, and participants will learn about research on the vulnerability of drones to manned aircraft, drone protection elements and technologies. This allows you to create a tailored system for your airport.

The Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) developed the Specific Operations Risks Assessment (SORA). SORA is a multi-stage analysis which assigns two risk classes - Air Risk Class (ARC) and Ground Risk Class (GRC) - and enables operators to determine a so-called Specific Assurance & Integrity Level (SAIL) of an intended operation of UAS at aerodromes. Based on this mitigation measures are defined to meet operational safety objectives (OSO).

Training will conclude with the concept of STS (Standard Scenarios) which shortens the risk assessment for typical drone operations and can be utilised by operators as well as authorities as a template to lower the workload required for approving UAS operations.

Veronica Schömer, Pilot B747, M. Eng.

Veronica is a highly knowledgeable and experienced aviation expert with a passion for flight safety. She took her first steps into aviation 20 years ago in a glider club. As first officer on Boeing 737 and senior first officer on Boeing 747 Veronica gained more than 14 years of experience in commercial aviation with 6000 flight hours. She holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Specialising in European aviation regulations, and with her thesis on Confidential Safety Reporting as a starting point, Veronica strives for the adaption of safety concepts known from commercial aviation to the rapidly evolving and diverse drone industry.

As a professional trainer, she has trained students of RWTH Aachen University in its flight simulator and developed training concepts to introduce new electronic flight bag to pilots.

With the UAS+ Committee of ‘Vereinigung Cockpit e.V.’ (German Airline Pilots' Association) Veronica supports the successful integration of manned and unmanned aviation.

To access our live training course you will simply need:  

  • a computer (PC or Mac), tablet (iPad or Android) or a similar device with a webcam and microphone 
  • Internet connection.

Detailed instructions (incl. link for the virtual classroom audience) together with digital training materials will be sent to attendees before commencement of the course (in general one week before course start)! 

The airsight team is at your disposal to facilitate your personal virtual classroom experience and support you with setting up and testing your system.

Organisational Details

For this airsight virtual classrom (online live training session), the course hours are scheduled from 9:00 – 15:00 (local time in Berlin).  Breaks will be scheduled by the instructor based on participants’ requirements. 

At the end of the course, all participants will receive a digital airsight certificate based on EASA training regulations, which is highly recognized throughout the aviation industry.
