Runway Safety

The runway plays a key role in flight safety, especially during take-off and landing, the two most critical phases of the flight.

Runway incursions and excursions are the main safety related incidents at airports and could lead to catastrophic accidents. Although being a priority for regulatory bodies such as EASA, FAA and ICAO, runway safety remains a very complex issue for airport stakeholders.

Established Surface Movement Guidance (A-SMGCS) and ground-based radars support the reduction of those critical runway events. However, not only new technologies are significant in increasing safety but human factors are the single greatest defence against aircraft incidents. Far-reaching training and sufficient understanding from airport operatives, airline personnel, airport stakeholders and air traffic control are essential in providing suitable runway safety.

This highly interactive 3-day course benefits from the insight of operational flight crew and gives participants the opportunity to improve their knowledge of runway safety, airfield design and systems that can lead to risk. Furthermore, attendees learn how to identify and mitigate threats and take a proactive approach towards airfield and runway safety, gain a stronger working knowledge of 'live' airfield operations and how equipment and human error influence runway safety.

ICAO Annex 14 lists many airport design features that serve as a useful tool to review requirements, ensure compliance and protect the organisation from runway-based incidents. The course also places emphasis on ICAO Annex 19 and Safety Management System (SMS) as well as the upcoming changes to the new operational concepts of assessment, measurement and reporting of runway surface conditions (ICAO Circular 355).

Working with case studies, developing individual strategies for managing risk in a specific operational environment, this course is designed to provide you with the tools to return to your organisation and directly implement new ideas to benefit from a safer, more efficient operation.

Mark Taylor

Mark is an Airbus A320 Captain for a major flag carrier Airline, with 11,000 flying hours and 15 years experience working in Aviation. During this time, he has held positions in Flight safety, taking responsibility for embedding Safety Management Systems (SMS) as well as completing Flight operations safety audits and risk assessments to ensure compliance. Also, Mark has taken responsibility for delivering mitigation strategies to manage risk.

Mark's key area of expertise is Human Factors where he has written and delivered numerous courses to support Aviation and Healthcare with developing and monitoring a 'no blame culture.' An extensive knowledge of Flight operations and Safety Management, coupled with front line flying experience enables Mark to offer innovative, efficient and highly effective solutions.
