The international air transport system is characterised by a complex interaction of various actors involved (e.g. airport, airline, air traffic control) and their specific technologies and operating procedures. Every aspect of aviation is defined and controlled by a comprehensive set of rules. Especially for someone new to the topic, understanding these complex procedures and rules can be very challenging.

This 4-day course aims to provide an introduction to aviation and an in-depth overview of correlations between air operations and technical matters in selected areas of responsibility of the various stakeholders.

During the course, the participants will be introduced to the national and international legal framework which are of great importance for all participating actors. Then, the functions and tasks of the different key-players (airport, airline, air traffic control) and their interaction with each other are discussed in detail. In addition, the basic procedures of flight operations are presented and explained from the point of view of all organisations involved.

The course focuses on the structure of the various organisations as well as their daily operations and interfaces between them. With the help of the participants’ input, the trainer and guest lecturers will develop aviation characteristics: What are the challenges of landside and airside flight operations at the airport? Who are the key-players? What does a day in the cockpit look like and how is it prepared? What are the operating procedures and technologies used in a flight? How do airlines interact with each other? How does air traffic control ensure safety at the airport and in the air? Which different systems are available?

These and many other questions will be solved and explained during the course with the help of practical examples, discussions and simulations (e.g. Airbus A320), giving the participants a comprehensive insight into all aspects of international aviation and the associated procedures.

Trainer

Niklas Feldhammer, M.Sc.

Niklas holds a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. As a member of airsight’s Aerodrome Certification team he supports aerodrome operators and Civil Aviation Authorities within certification or re-certification projects, considering airports’ infrastructures and operations, as well as with organisational topics.

His key areas of focus include compliance checks and further tasks concentrating on aerodrome certification and related fields. In addition, he is experienced with the compliant design and planning of airside infrastructure, including the use of simulation software – always taking into account the unique client specific needs.

At airsight he benefits from a wide range of project experience for aerodrome operators worldwide. He recently supported several European airports, including Luxembourg and Milan, with their internal audit programs. Additionally, he played a key role in the development of an infrastructural Corrective Action Plan for a major Middle Eastern aerodrome in order to get certified.

Tina Werner-Huynh

Tina holds a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering and further specialised in Aerodrome Compliance and Auditing. As a member of airsight’s consulting team, these combined competencies enable her to assist Aerodromes within their certification process and related fields (e.g. compliance checks and audits, manuals and procedures, compliance monitoring). 

For airsight, she conducted projects for clients such as Aéroports de Cameroun, Luxembourg, Belgrade and Dammam Airport. She also conducted inspections of their airside infrastructure (incl. signs, lights, marking), including notably the assessment of the pavement conditions for the former Airport Berlin-Tegel.

More recently, Tina audited the Nominated Persons of a larger German Airport regarding the EU/EASA requirements – a task of several months requiring a good knowledge of the applicable regulations as well as project management skills.

Veronica Schömer, Pilot B747, M. Eng.

Veronica is a highly knowledgeable and experienced aviation expert with a passion for flight safety. She took her first steps into aviation 20 years ago in a glider club. As first officer on Boeing 737 and senior first officer on Boeing 747 Veronica gained more than 14 years of experience in commercial aviation with 6000 flight hours. She holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Specialising in European aviation regulations, and with her thesis on Confidential Safety Reporting as a starting point, Veronica strives for the adaption of safety concepts known from commercial aviation to the rapidly evolving and diverse drone industry.

As a professional trainer, she has trained students of RWTH Aachen University in its flight simulator and developed training concepts to introduce new electronic flight bag to pilots.

With the UAS+ Committee of ‘Vereinigung Cockpit e.V.’ (German Airline Pilots' Association) Veronica supports the successful integration of manned and unmanned aviation.
