Introduction to Airport Operations
Airport operations demand the highest standards of safety, reliability, efficiency and comfort. Given a continuously growing demand for air traffic, a high concentration of movements and a limited place available to handle operations, it is required to implement optimised procedures and technologies and a close connection of all stakeholders. For instance: about 75,000 people employed by more than 500 companies ensure that up to 195,000 passengers are being carried every day at Germany’s biggest hub in Frankfurt.
Attending this 3-day training course will provide you with a structured and practical introduction to all multifaceted aspects of airport operations; exploring the functional elements of an airport including a detailed explanation of aircraft operations, airside and landside processes as well as other topics of interest, such as flight planning, safety, maintenance, winter service, emergency and rescue management.
If you are new to airport management or aerodrome operations, or have worked primarily in a specialised role only, and now wish to broaden your knowledge and understanding (perhaps to meet a promotion requirement), this course is a comprehensive and in depth introduction.
Specifically you will learn details about: the role of the airport and each of its components in the global aviation business; how different airports meet different market needs and have different requirements; aircraft operations from start-up to shut-down; operating aircraft and Aerodromes (ADR’s) in all weather conditions, including low visibility; safety management principles and how to protect the ADR and operations from threats, including obstacles and wildlife; and, the impact airport operations can have on the environment, and how these impacts can be reduced or eliminated.

Mark Turner
Mark is a professionally accredited trainer and assessor, whose entire career (spanning more than 20 years) has been dedicated to work within the airside safety and operations sector. His sector competence is maintained by continuing to work in a live airside operational environment. Possessing both frontline and management experience, gained from working at airports of various scales (regional to international hub) around the world, Mark is able to enhance the learning experience by sharing industry good practices. For more than 10 years he has been contracted by Heathrow Airport Ltd not only to train and assess staff, successfully delivering the UK's first accredited aviation apprenticeships in the airside safety and operations sector, but also to support senior management within the Airfield Operations Department.
Mark has attended the UK Bird Strike Committee (BSC), is an Associate Member of both the International Association of Airport Executives (IAAE) and the UK Society for Education and Training (ASET) and sits on the UK Aviation Industry Skills Board’s (AISB’s) People 1st Airport Special Interest Group (SIG).

Gordon Griffiths
Gordon is an aviation business consultant with extensive knowledge and experience of the civil aviation industry. Initially trained as a pilot for British Airways, his 25 year service with B.O.A.C and its successor, British Airways included the development of air services to the Seychelles, the introduction of Concorde services to Miami, the opening of air services to Baltimore and the transfer of all service personnel from Terminal 3 to the new Terminal 4 at Heathrow.
As Managing Director of Liverpool Airport he undertook the privatisation of the airport to attract capital investment. This role required him to convince airlines to migrate from the nearby competitor airport, Manchester, a marketing challenge made more difficult by the years of investment in that airport.. Success was achieved firstly through critical remodelling of the airport’s services to achieve greater efficiency, then through reducing manpower and attaining higher service standards, finally by developing plans for terminal and airfield expansion. With British Aerospace Civil Aircraft Division his market development responsibilities included a study of airport congestion.
In his consulting role, he has tended to focus on airport projects including privatisations, value for money engineering and revenue generation through market driven development. An important client, BASEA engaged his part-time services as Director General to oversee and direct the affairs of the trade association and to support the members in the sale of their products.
