Capacity is a critical factor in airport development to achieve sustainable growth. Many facilities need to cater for a fluctuation in demand and some airports are facing severe capacity constraints during peak times due to considerate growth in air traffic - causing pressure on infrastructure and resulting in congestion and delays.

This 4-day training course - aimed at airport operation managers, airport planners and engineers as well as airline and authority representatives - provides an overview of the factors that influence airport capacity and introduces relevant planning parameters and assessment methods – from the landside to the airside, on the ground and in the air.

Total airport capacity depends on system interdependencies and critical subsystems. It is limited by the most restrictive element and cannot be expressed in one single number. Participants will therefore understand the airport as a system of various linked components and processes.

The course introduces the concept of capacity and level of service and provides delegates with an understanding of the significance of traffic profiles and distribution as well as an overview of various capacity assessment tools such as rules of thumb and calculations by IATA, ICAO etc., benchmarking examples, analytical techniques and methods of fast time simulation. It also presents strategic airport planning considerations and capacity enhancement measures.

The course contains presentations on all main topics, which will be supported by group exercises as well as discussions.
