The aviation industry undergoes great consolidation. Bankruptcy of airlines mean revenue streams are less predictable for airports. Airports respond by looking to diversify their revenue streams by developing real estate, expand their terminal offers and looking to improve efficiency by using smart technology. 

In the past, airports had nearly 100% revenues generated by air traffic and terminal buildings were mainly functional. In an increasingly commercialized world, airports are evolving from just being public infrastructure for air transport to business that generate revenues from different sources. Revenues from non-aviation sources are more and more important for the profitability of the airport. A diverse range of things to do at the airport increases the attractiveness for passengers. Non-aviation revenues help the airport to be profitable in times of shocks to the aviation industry and increase revenues for the shareholders. Smart Airports and digitalization do not only help to improve the customer experience but also increase revenues.

This rapidly evolving and changing environment holds numerous challenges for airport staff and airport management but also offers great opportunities for the individual to expand their expertise.

Dr. Mirjam Wiedemann

Mirjam is one of the few experts worldwide in the emerging field of airport cities and non-aviation revenues and specialises in strategy and master planning for airports, airport cities and urban economic development. She holds a degree in industrial engineering, a PhD from Southern Cross University in Australia, has ample training experience and is a regular expert speaker at international aviation conferences. Mirjam is working and advising on different airport city and aerotropolis strategies worldwide. She is also an advisory board member of an EU project in aviation, an Executive of the Urban Turbine research project at Cranfield University and an Adjunct Professional to two Australian Universities.
