Airport City and Aerotropolis Master Planning

‘Airport City’ or ‘Aerotropolis’ are new business models for airports where real estate developments on airport land, or in close proximity to the airport, help to increase non-aviation revenues and sometimes develop the airport as a destination in its own right. The Airport City and Aerotropolis business model develops rapidly to one of the preferred business models for airports worldwide. Prominent examples are Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport, Dubai International Airport, Dubai South and Incheon International Airport.

Similar to an airport master plan, an Airport City or Aerotropolis master plan should represent the strategic vision of the future development. An Airport City or Aerotropolis master plan goes beyond the airport planning and needs to take into account economic development, urban planning and transport arrangements of the wider region as it has numerous interfaces with the region and so the planning cannot stop at the airport fence. Airport staff and airport management often struggle to understand these challenges.

Many airports rely on external funding and hence a sound strategy for bankable projects is crucial. The main challenge of developing a sound master plan is to achieve a strategy that is supported by all stakeholders, fits the future demand of companies and being in favour of investors and financial institutions.

airsight’s 3-day training course has been designed to give an introduction to the topic for a wide range of professionals from different disciplines and backgrounds.  The course will introduce the relevant strategic planning parameters and discuss benefits, challenges and potential pitfalls on the way to a successful Airport City or Aerotropolis.

The course contains presentations on all main topics, which will be supported by group exercises, case studies and discussions.
